I love making handmade gifts for as many people as I can. Then I have some baskets to crochet and a shirt to cross-stitch. I make hats, scarves, and mittens. The cost of the yarn plays into my gift choices as well as the time involved as well. I would have to say that homemade goes to a select few and only those we actually appreciate the time, effort, and money put into it.
I have some family members that do not appreciate handmade gifts so I only make for those that truly appreciate the time and effort of the gift.

I make a few gifts for people that I know will appreciate them. I knit for the precious people at "Knit-A-Square". These lovely children use squares made into blankets, vests, sweaters, handwarmers and hats. Each child is precious. I also make some knit toys. I knit for family also — hats, sweaters and toys. When I was fighting cancer, I made an agreement with the Doctors that I could have my knitting bag right up to the operating room door!
I made 2 inches of a sweater before they took it away from me. Later, when I could hold the knitting needles again, I finished that sweater for some darling child somewhere through Knit for Kids!
Knitting is peaceful, recreation, calming and …productive. It has got me through some stressful times. I have a very appreciating family and they all love the things I make.
I knit only for very special people for Christmas. Then I also knit for charities where the need is great. I always try to knit socks for family members for Christmas, and then perhaps a special sweater for one of the grandchildren. Would love to win the new "Holidays" yarn! My goal is always to knit something for everyone in my immediate family; I usually end up making a few items for a few people!

I enjoy using self-striping yarn for other than for the "intended" purpose, and have used sock yarn for some very lovely throws, wraps and lapghans with delightful color serendipities. My siblings and husband have gotten afghans for Christmas, but not in the same year. My niece got a shawl for her wedding.
Thanks for the chance! But mostly these are hats, mitts, washcloths — fairly quick and easy projects. I knit socks for my grandchildren. My grandson was in Europe this year and completely wore out his socks while sight seeing. He sent me a text asking for more socks this Christmas. I try to make small quick things for my 3 sisters, and 2 daughters. I try to make everyone something but there are a few people that get the extra special gifts.
I rotate this every year so in the end everyone will get a special gift. One special gift picked at random in a gift exchange game during our annual family Christmas Party. I love knitting socks for my husband. He loves hand knit socks and has a drawer full.

My intention is handknits for everyone. The Reality is heirlooms for a few, often finished in the wee hours of Christmas morn. I love making special handmade gifts for the wee ones in the family. Socks, hats, scarfs are my favorite things to make for the holidays and I always start in July so I can gave plenty of stress free knitting!!! Love the new colors!!! I make an afghan for every baby in the family, and then some other gifts are also handmade: It depends on how many afghans I have to make in a year! It depends on the Christmas! I feel blessed to be able to bless other people! Handmade gifts for everyone. Most of my handmade are given as gifts. I do knit for charity also. Our local Playhouse has a craft table and all proceeds go directly to the playhouse. It may be small in size but it will be filled with warmth.
It just seems like if you have taken the time to make something, during the process you are constantly thinking of that person you are making it for and that makes it special. This yarn is beautiful. This is an awesome gift that I would use to make something for a family friend who is expecting their 2nd child in Sept. I make handmade gifts only for a few.
